Improving Academic Performance and Self-Confidence through Kids Club

Umar Bello KAN/FGE/GPH/3815 is a 13-year-old child who lives in Rijia Lemo community under Fagge LGA. Umar Bello has three siblings who also attend the same school. Umar is a beneficiary of the ICSHSSA 3 project.

Umar has not been performing well academically and also lacks self-confidence in. Umar’s father is a petty trader and, as such, does not have quality time for Umar, although Umar’s mother is a full-time housewife and she does not understand the boy’s needs.

The caseworker in charge of Umar discovered this challenge while assessing the educational performance of Umar, and the issues identified were that Umar withdraws to himself, lacks self-confidence, and does not perform well academically.

Umar was introduced to Kid’s Club and was given assistance with homework at home during the home visit and the Kid’s Club activity. Umar’s mother was introduced to the Gender session and the caregivers’ forum, where she was enlightened on appropriate parenting skills. She adopted the learnings and started paying close attention to Umar and to his other siblings.

After four months of providing support and monitoring of Umar’s performance, Umar has improved in his academic performance and self-confidence.

Umar in his statement

I appreciate the ICHSSA 3 project for enrolling me on the project and my case manager for always caring about my performance at school and involving me in the community kids’ club session.”

The mother also appreciated the effort of the ICHSSA 3 Project, GPHI, and the case worker for the time and resources spent to make their lives better.
